Website optimisation tips
We are constantly being asked, "How do I/we get our website listed highly in the search engines?" Well, it isn't rocket science by any means; most of it is plain common sense but you just need to know what to do and how to do it.
The next question when we have given a prospective client the benefit of our hard earned advice is, "How much does all this cost?" Compared to other companies we are very, very inexpensive.
You may have a new site, or you may have an existing one which is struggling - it's all the same to us and we can help.
We can optimise your pages.
We can help you with keywording; it is no use being No 1 in Google for a particular search term if nobody is searching for that term, so we research the best keywords for your business.
We can write perfect copy for your pages - the right amount of words with the correct amount of keywords in there. Over the years we have gathered a great deal of information about different sections of industry from lingerie to property, form holiday sites to shoes etc, so we are able to generate the text you need for your pages.
We can help to raise your rank.
We can help you in acquiring valuable links to increase your link popularity and traffic to your site.
There are several things which all siteowners need to know and do to get their new or existing websites well placed in the major search engines (SE's), and for starters let me say that for very good reasons we do not touch the following types of websites, though what we have to tell you applies to them as much as any other type of site only much more so:-
Adult
Finance
Insurance
It really isn't worth our while to work with siteowners of the above types of website because those areas are so hugely competitive that most companies employ their own in house optimisers and can afford to pay for the best links which are way out of the pocket of most small business owners.
Ok, here we go.
N0 1 is that each page of any website which you view has what we call a page title which should describe the contents of that page whilst still being short and sweet - up to 65 characters (letters) in length is perfect. Let's imagine that you sell top hats in Bournemouth for example, so your page title could be similiar to this - Joe Blog's top hats, Bournemouth - 32 characters inc spaces and this is ample.
No 2 is that the page also has what we call a description which does exactly what it says in that it describes in more details what the page is all about, and 120 characters should be about the max for this (though some optimisers use up to 180), and could read as follows - Quality top hats from Joe Blogs in Bournmouth; Christies, Wombles etc, all delivered free in Bournemouth area - 108 characters inc spaces
No 3 is the text content of the page. You MUST have an adequate amount of text which is embedded with the correct keywords for the page. If a page does not have enough content it will eventually be disgarded by the major SE's, or at least it won'r be recognised as being a serious page.
No 4 takes longer. Each and every website out there needs to have links from other sites to be acknowledged by the SE's. A search engine takes a look at your site, sees just 10 links to it and immediately places it on page 40 or wherever (unless you are in a minority category)
We can give you a good idea of how many links your competitors have and we are able to let you know how to acquire a similar amount over time. DO NOT go out and rashly buy 100, 200 links all of a sudden because the SE's pick up on tricks like this and could well blacklist your site! Link acquisition needs to be done carefully and steadily.
A little about links:
Inbound or one way links are those which come from other sites or directories and which you do not have to return, so they are in effect, one way from the other site to your site. These are the most valuable by far, and the best ones also have some pagerank (PR) which will eventually be passed on to your site. Inbound or one way links are the most difficult to obtain, mainly because nobody wants to pass on an asset to someone else, especially if the other party is a competitor. The most valuable links are those from sites within your business category. It may go against the grain but some siteowners have to buy links.
The others are called reciprocal links. This means that you exchange links with other sites, preferably in the same area of business. An example of a good link exchange would be a French holiday site exchanges with a camping site which has pages about France.
An example of a poor exchange link would be your top hat site exchanging with one for impotence drugs. Little or no benefit would be gained by either party in a case like this.
NB: One thing neither we nor anyone else can affect is the age of your site. If you have a new domain then I'm afraid that for some considerable time your SE placements will be lower than a similarly optimised site in the same category as yours which is far older. SE's like to see stability and stability comes with age.
