Patio paving: If you have a site relating to this topic and would like to see it featured here then please email sales@livelistings.co.uk There is no doubt whatsoever that building a patio onto the back of the house will add to it's value eventually - providing it has been properly paved and some half decent paving slabs used. Otherwise forget it because you are just wasting your money. Some people we know locally made a patio and they had a party last summer to celebrate when it was finished. They are such lovely people that nobody present had the heart to say what they thought about it - it looked like someone had just emptied a skip full of broken slabs on their back lawn and thrown some mortar at it. Well, that's how not to do it. If you are paving a patio for yourself then it is a good idea to make sure that the ground underneath is not going to sink a couple of years after the paving is laid. Dig down a bit to firm ground and I always think it is worth dropping some concrete in as a base. To be honest I'm not one of these guys who just packs some coarse sand down and lays the pavers on top, all of which may or may not last through next winter. I prefer to take rather more time and get it right the first time so instead of laying the pavers on sand you are far and away better off in the long run if you mix some cement and lay them on that. If you are having your patio done for you from start to finish by a contractor then it is advisable to get several quotes and remember that the cheapest is not always the best. What happens to the soil/earth which is dug up to make room for the foundations? Are they going to take it away or are they leaving that to you? Make a list of questions to ask the contractors but make sure you ask them all the same things so that your quotes are like for like. Some of you will undoubtedly find that some patio paving contractors are nothing but cowboys who will not be able to show you some of their previously completed work - this is a must as far as you are concerned because your own patio will most probably end up looking like one they have already done. So, to be fair to yourself you need to see a patio that the contractor in question has completed at least 1 year ago, and 2 years ago for preference. When we did our patio some years ago I found that there was a huge variation in both the quality and price of the paving slabs. I ended up buying Wentworth pavers in the end for no other reason than we liked them, but there are some natural stone pavers about which don't cost any more money than prefabricated ones - Indian Sandstone for example - and you may like the thought of using natural substances as opposed to man made ones. |
