Campervan insurance for driving throughout the UK and Europe.

How many times has it gone through the average middle aged man's mind that he ought to throw everything out the window and start life afresh? Starting afresh in this case of course means to take off round the world, or at least right round Europe in a campervan, a free spirit going wherever he so chosses, whenever he so chosses. Apparently the Gentler Sex enjoys the same ambitions but not as often and not nearly so deeply. Probably this has something to do with seeing children and grandchildren on a regular basis which we males don't take into account so strongly.

All this is well and good but the whole issue needs detailed planning from the off, so to take on an escapade of this magnitude we need to look at it logically and in terms of the most important things first. Now many people would put their campervan insurance to the back of the queue and attend to it as and when they had the time and inclination, but this issue is vitally important and needs to be seen to right away. Why? Because you are just about to embark on the trip of a lifetime which will no doubt cover several thousand miles and several months. Lots can happen in that time!

This sort of trip is usually undertaken by the young taking a Gap Year, or the middle aged and retired who have built up a nest egg and want to break free for a year or so while they still have the chance. We believe that it's no use having all that money if you are too old and too infirm to do anything useful with it.

Now rightly or wrongly, the younger end pay more for thir campervan insurance than the middle aged and/or retired do, assuming the latter have decent driving records of course. The youngsters don't have the necessary driving experience which qualifies them for cheaper insurance policies, so their best bet is to see if there are any half decent policies out there which accept monthly payments.

This sort of European or global circumnavigation in a campervan can be pretty expensive to set up initially as most of us would have to purchase quite a few bits and pieces especially for the trip. Apart from that there is fuel to buy on a regular basis, and of course you have to pay if you stay on a site during your travels. This last brings to mind a conversation we had with a couple in St Jean de Monts, western France during the summer of 2009, and whilst we were parked on a site and paying a nightly fee they were parked in one of the town's car parks with lots of other camper vans alongside. We moved that day and saved a small fortune, but we have wondered since whether our insurance covered for doing this.
