If you are a home owner then the onus is upon you to arrange insurance for your house or home. If you rent a house, flat, apartment etc then the landlord normally takes this upon himself/herself to arrange it for you because that way at least they know that the property is actually insured.

Not so with home contents insurance: whether you own or rent then this is your problem, your expense, and that being the case you would normally be on the lookout for a cheap policy. But here we have a possible misnomer because cheap is not always the best solution, so what you need to find out is whether the cheap insurance you have been quoted for is like for like with other policies.

Sadly, these days the place not to get cheap home contents insurance is on your local highstreet, though don't rule them out entirely just yet because they have something valuable to offer and that is the personal touch, and the personal touch is not what you will get if you buy through the Internet - at least not after you have spoken to the lady on the phone the first time - try calling her back and you will almost certainly get a new voice every time. Better to spend a few £££'s more with your local firm who are approachable 5 and a half days a week than go really cheap with a company who can't always deal with your query because to keep the premiums cheap their staffing levels are low.

However, we always say that where the competition is the most fierce then there is the most competition, and so it is that the the Net is the most competitive area for insurance of any sort, so it is there where you need to address your time. I may get slated for this but I detest the "Compare" websites, many of which are a scam (I'm not daft enough to point fingers though), and some of which load the premiums anyway, but you believe that they are giving you a cheap quote for your home contents insurance when in reality you can get a better deal elsewhere providing that you are willing to spend a little time to get it.

Do some easy research on the Net and fill in a few forms for quotes or even call the companies concerned if they allow you to - if they don't allow that I would never buy from them. Of course doing it this way defeats the point of the Compare websites entirely but it will  at least ensure that you get cheap home contents insurance without a premium loading.
