As a new driver you may find that insurance is not as cheap as you thought.Oh dear,insurance companies in general cast a cynical eye over policy applications for new drivers. In fact, there are many such who will be reluctant to even offer you a quote. Sounds harsh, but in reality the insurance company knows full well that the new driver lacks experience and is in sole charge of a ton + of mobile metal which he/she can hurtle though your street with impunity, and they have to pick up the bill for any damage caused. It is a well known fact that for new drivers many people expect a reduction in insurance premium when they have passed their test, but believe me, this is not always the case. A supervised learner driver has around the same risk of accident as a newly qualified driver and insurance companies set their prices to reflect this. In fact, a very new driver is at his/her most dangerous when fresh on the road becuase that have nobody to turn to if a difficult situation arises. There is some good news of course because all the above assumes that the new driver is young, which is not always the case by any means. If for instance, the applicant is a female in her forties she will be looked upon far more favourably by the insurers than would a young male of 17 or 18 years who is looking for his first insurance policy, and in fact it is young males who push up insurance premiums because they are the ones who cause, or are involved in, such a high proportion of accidents. But we can't alter our age by choice just to obtain cheaper car insurance; time goes by quickly enough and very shortly that new driver will find that his or her premiums will be less and less as the years go by. The only advice we can give is to try your best not to make a claim, and to buy a car in the first place which is in a low insurance group. |
