Insurance for house contents

We always thought that Autumn and winter were the worst times for rain and floods, but in the June of 2007 we were proved wrong, very wrong indeed. We were on holiday with friends in western France at the time and the weather there was pretty mixed up, raining most days for an hour or two and then some sun, but non of us gave much thought to what was happening back home in England until a neighbour gave us his two day old newspaper.

It seemed that whilst we moaned and groaned about a few spots of rain on holiday poor old England was awash with the stuff! The front page of the paper showed darkness lit up but forked lightning and a rain lashed street which was completely flooded. Our friends groaned because their house is one of many which was built on a flood plain. They rang a near neighbour's mobile and were told the bad news.

Our friends house was flooded, their neighbours houses were also flooded, but the difference was that our pals had been sifting through lots of different insurance companies before the holiday to find the best contents insurance, and sadly they had not managed to make a decision about it all before they came away with us, which unfortunately meant that they had no contents insurance at all, never mind the best on the market, which was what they had wanted to find.

Of course we commiserated with them because they are our best mates, but we had all come on holiday in one car which was ours, and as we had only had a week out of the two week holiday neither my wife or I felt too inclined to break off and drive home so soon. After all, we reasoned, what could we do? The house was four feet deep in dirty water and nothing could be done until the tide receded so to speak. Then of course we would be all to pleased to help.

We took then to Nantes airport from where they flew home to their devastated house, still bemoaning the fact that they hadn't spent more time a few weeks earlier in finding the best contents insurance for their property.
