Mobile home holidays at home and abroad - will they survive this year in a deep recession?

We have taken mobile home holidays for years now, usually in various parts of France, and usually but not always with a UK operator, and though we have noticed some differences between the two the quality of accommodation was roughly the same. Please take a look at our sister site for more info on mobile home holidays in France. Our other sister site also gives Information about mobile homes in France for holiday hire, and the differences in what French and British tour operators offer.

Years ago when we had a young family, and before the days of the Internet we used to go camping, again mainly in France, and they were truly the most enjoyable holidays we ever had until then, but later on when the kids had flown the nest so to speak my wife and I decided that we needed a tad more comfort on holiday so about 15 years ago we chose to stay in a mobile home for the first time and we've never looked back. We stayed in St Jean de Monts in the Vendee which is on the West coast of France and we loved the place so much we have been back there many times.

It soon became apparent to us that there are many types of mobile homes from the small ones which are barely large enough for a couple to the "Cottage" type which can easily house a large family, and as time has gone on they seem to have become larger and larger, probably because people demand more personal space than they used to years ago. Anyway, this is all good news for the holidaymaker because they don't seem to cost a great deal more year on year than they used to, and as the so called "credit crunch" begins to bite the prices which operators were hoping to get away with this year will come tumbling down like they did last year in 2008. I distinctly remember that several tour operators, some of the largest ones included, slashed their July 2008 mobile home holiday prices in half. Obviously it goes without saying that the operators have to make a profit or we would all have to revert to camping again, but pennies will be hard come by this Summer of 2009 and any price reduction will be very welcome for more than one reason.

The first reason of course is that mobile home holidays abroad will have to compete with mobile home holidays based in the UK. Personally I believe that going to France is far better value even though you have the extra cost of a channel crossing though I expect some fairly irate emails from tour operators whose opinions will invariably differ from mine.

The second reason a price reduction on your holiday will be welcome is because to holiday abroad in France, Spain etc we have the extra costs associated with a weak £ pound and a stronger Euro, meaning that everything we buy in the Eurozone will now cost so much more. A pint in our favourite English/Irish bar in St Jean de Monts is about 4.50 Euros which now translated to roughly £4.50 pounds Sterling - no thanks! This year we will be buying all our drinks in the supermarket and taking them back to the mobile home for later consumption which is a shame really because both we and other holidaymakers really enjoy an hour or so in a convivial atmosphere like that, and it means that bars over there are going to suffer this year too.

One would think that taking a holiday with one of the specialist camping holiday companies would be considerably cheaper than mobile home holidays but in 2007 we found out quite by chance when chatting to some of our neighbours who were tent camping on the same site as us that the company they were staying with (a major camping holiday company) were charging them exactly the same for their tent as we were paying to stay in a largish mobile home with a much smaller UK company, and quite understandably they were less than impressed when we compared prices!
