Self drive holidays to France - If you have a website relating to self drive holidays in France and you would like to see it featured here then please email: sales@livelistings.co.uk

No wonder the French don't travel far for their holidays: they don't need to because they live in a relatively large country with quite a few different climates - I mean, in August it can be mega hot in Provence for example so the locals take their holidays somewhere cooler, but still in France, maybe Brittany or Alsace, wherever, but they do love to go self drive and self catering when they take their holidays.

Many of us in the UK feel the same, and I know that we do because we are off to the Vendee at every opportunity. Self drive holidays are better if you like driving, which I do to a point, not here in England Land but I do enjoy it in France for many different reasons. When we arrive at the port in Poole after driving the thick end of 250 miles to get there from Chesterfield then that's when my holidays begin. It matters not to me how far I have to travel in France because it is always a pleasure to drive on their roads, though to be fair we try not to go there in high season when the Autoroutes are clogged with Brits fleeing to the South.

Will that happen in 2009 though? Our economy lies belly up in the mud and at the time of writing the £ Pound which was 1.42 Euros in the summer of 2007 is at 1.13 and may well go lower if Gordon B and his cronies fiddle with our exchange rate again., which of course will make things far more expensive when you arrive at your destination in France. So, what can we do to offset the cost of our self drive holiday?

At the risk of making myself very unpopular with some travel companies I suggest haggling with them first: I was talking to the rep for one of the largest camping/mobile homes companies in the summer of 2007 in St Jean de Monts and he told me that his firm charged £2,600 for a mobile home in the high season. I nearly gagged! I know for a fact that when we were there they charged exactly the same for a family to live in a tent as we paid our company to stay in a nice and comfy mobile home. So haggle, and haggle hard.

Taking your own food is an option for many people, after all you're going to France via self drive and when you get there you'll be self catering so take what you can with you. If you can't fit it in the car then borrow or hire a top box and fill it with tins and packets so that you won't have to use so many precious Euros.

Have a look at our sister site which also has a page or several for self drive holidays in France, and there is also a link there  taking you through to another page which details the most up to date European driving laws.
