On top of that we also prefer to go self catering because of the freedom it allows: no rigid meal times, come and go as you wish etc, and we also prefer the extra freedom that staying in a mobile home offers, but we go into that on another page. To top all that we do what so many other Brits do and that is to go self drive as well. There used to be four of us but our son got married and now we are down to three, but even so, to take self catering holidays the way we do them you need a large car because my two ladies take literally everything with them so a Citroen Picasso just about meets the criteria, and believe me there is some serious room in one of those (for a normal family). But that apart I can forsee that 2009 will be a year of  hardship for some but they can get over that to a great degree if they have enough space in their vehicle to take some boxes of food. That way you can save up tins and packets of food for some months before the holidays and you don't have to spend precious Euros when the currency exchange rate is as bad as now. Nothing gives you the same amount of freedom when you go to France as self catering holidays so it's worth taking those extra boxes or bags of food. With self catering you can drink when you like, eat when you like, and though the food in France can be superb it can also be expensive, so self catering holidays allow you to take your own if you like. France has always been somewhere I have wanted to live full time, but my wife steadfastly refuses to learn any of the language and says that she is unable to "get her head round it". I feel the same when she is watching Eastenders. So, we compromise and go to our favourite place in the Vendee (St Jean de Monts) once a year and more if we can manage it. Each time we go we try and stay in a mobile home owned by a different company so that I can make a fair like for like comparison for my camping site which was set up in July this year (2008). I may yet buy a mobile home for our holidays in France but until then we shall have to carry on lugging boxes of tiined food around so that at least we can go self catering.
