NB. Warning to drivers in France after 1st July 2008: Drivers face on the spot £70 fines (90Euros) if they are caught driving without having a reflective vest  and a luminous road hazard sign in the car. It is also wise for drivers going to France to comply with other driving laws:- Having a complete set of bulbs for the car, a proper First Aid kit and ensuring that headlights dip to the offside etc. If in doubt contact the AA. Also please take a look at our sister site for ideas and information about camping in France

The French have long since turned camping into an art form, though “camping” is certainly not what it’s all about these days. French camp sites generally have a fair mix of pitches for tent camping together with more luxurious mobile homes and spaces for those traveling with their own camper vans, and holidays in them are truly delightful.

Your camping holiday at a French owned site in a mobile home will differ to it’s British owned counterpart only in the level of the inventory offered. You will be provided with a coffee maker, but rarely a kettle or teapot, toasters are as rare as hen’s teeth and the cups are normally demi-tasse and not large enough for a decent cuppa. The electrics will invariably be of the 2 pin plug variety, so take an adapter or two. French holiday companies tend to provide that most baffling and (in the wrong hands), most dangerous of household tools, the French tin opener. This ghastly little implement is designed to stab tins to death with a series of violent jabs around the lid, leaving (until you have mastered the art) an extremely dangerous lid and tin. Take a tip, take your own as many a Brit has visited A&E departments after using a French tin opener. Beware!

So it is that French holiday companies cater mainly for the French in terms of some basic requirements, but nonetheless, the French people will welcome you with open arms and are the friendliest of people to holiday with. A good tip though when searching for a French camping holiday is to read what’s written on the tin before booking.

Ever thought that your next French camping holiday could be a wedding? Hows this for an idea? Get in touch with Grisel and her husband who have a Monte Carlo wedding planner website and who are based in Monaco, in the South of France. Get married in Monaco and combine it with a honeymoon and holiday travelling around the South of France. Great idea, and I wish we had thought of it 38 years ago when we got married here on a cold and wet English Summer day.
