There are many small villages within the Peak District boundaries, but few can be more idyllic than Great Longstone which nestles in the countryside off the main road nearly 2 miles North of Bakewell, the ancient capital of the Peak, and 10 miles South of Buxton with it's Roman Spa baths which are in working condition today.
Bakewell by the way was mentioned in the Domesday Book, as was the church there, and was quite an important centre with a market even then.
Buxton is hailed as theCultural Capital of the Peak District, and as a Spa Town, Buxton has been a popular holiday resort for centuries.
But what about accommodation in the Peak District? The Peak District is a tourist area and as such it abounds with B & B's, guesthouses and the like, but there is one rather exquisite house in Gt Longstone which is owned and run by Mike and Ruth Hirst. It is called Timbers and is nicely away from traffic noise with it's off road parking, but near to Bakewell, Chatsworth and Haddon Hall.
As the editor of this site I happen to know of this property and can vouch for the fact that it is scrupulously clean and the owners nice and friendly. |
