Camping Les Amiaux, Le Clarys Plage and Les Genets, St Jean de Monts, Vendee: Saint Jean de Monts is all about carefree holidays in the sun in a clean and safe environment : pathways and bicycle paths between the sea, the sand dunes, the forest and the marshes, or even jaunts on the islands and visits around Nantes and La Rochelle, children and families are welcome, events and activities from Easter to Toussaints, golf, thalassatherapy, casino, yachting and immaculate beaches for swimming. Follow the link to the official St Jean de Monts tourism website

The town has a large market twice weekly, Weds and Sat, and bustles with activity on those days, starting early and finishing around noon, but even then there are parking spaces to be found, especially at the top of the town near to the main beach. If you are camping or staying in a mobile home (classed as the same thing) in St Jean-de-Monts then you really need a car to make the best of your holidays, either bring it with you on the ferry and drive down from the port or fly to Nantes Atlantique airport and hire a car for your holiday there. Another of our sister sites offers further information about camping holidays in St Jean de Monts.

We have stayed in St Jean de Monts many times, twice at Les Amiaux, and one of those times being  in 2007 which is when we met and fell in love with the little red squirrel above who regularly came to us for breakfast. She was there the morning we had to leave, scratching around as usual, and I have to say that the parting was a sad one. It's such a shame that we have so few like her here in the UK.

St Jean de Monts is like some other towns in France which are built right on the sea front in that there are two parts to the town - a town at the top on the sea front with the other half leading down to where the bulk of the shops are some several hundred feet below sea level. God alone knows what would happen if there was even a a mini tsunami there! There is a wonderful little street there which nestles between some restaurants and leads down to the middle of town. To find it you need to park opposite the beach and find the Lady in the Fountain. Go across the road from there and you can't miss it! The shops in this street are all obviously aimed at the tourist trade, but in a nice way. It is wonderful, it is vibrant and there is a mix of France and Africa in those shops. Somehow the shopkeepers in France seem to be that little more polite to strangers than they are in the UK, and you certainly feel that is the case here in St Jean.

Without any shadow of a doubt this is most certainly a tourist town, in fact the whole of the Vendee depends on tourism and agriculture, and I am often put off by overtly tourist areas but St Jean de Monts has that special appeal for my family and I that we keep going back year after year, not always to the same camp site of course, because we like to sample what other companies have to offer.

Being realistic, camping in St Jean de Monts is like camping anywhere else - the holiday is pretty much the same but St Jean has tthat little extra, the "je ne sais quoi" factor.
