Camping & mobile home holidays in Carnac & Carnac Plage, southern Brittany
The two places are virtually joined at the hip, Carnac itself being the town area and Carnac Plage is where the beaches are - roughly 3.5 kms of lovely golden sandy beaches to play on. There is such a vast expanse of sand that there is plenty of space for everyone here, however busy it gets.
Carnac has lots of history to explore in the Alignments or Megaliths which are about 3,000 standing stones of various shapes and sizes, and it is thought that some of the oldest stones date from the Neolithic period and the most recent from the Bronze Age. Seriously, these standing stones have to be seen to be believed, and one of the best ways to see them is to jump on the little train which takes you round the town and surrounding area including the stones which are all over the place.
Back to modern times and Carnac, Carnac Plage and the small town very close by called La Trinité sur Mer have all become very much involved in the leisure industry and offer superb camping and mobile home holidays.
Carnac town lies at the gateway to the Quiberon peninsular, a 15 km spit of land stretching out into the Baie de Quiberon. Quiberon, a very nice and upmarket town lies at the far end of the peninsular where there is a really great beach, and further along are masses of gigantic rocks which are fine for climbing or sunbathing on.
If you ever actually make it to Quiberon you might think about taking a boat trip to the beautiful Belle Ile where life is lived in the slow lane. The sea at the far side of the island (facing south) can be very dangerous for swimmers and isn't called the Cote Sauvage for nothing!
Belle Ile actually means Beautiful island, and in all fairness it lives up to the name. It is 10 miles long and up to 6 mileswide and is the largest of the Breton islands, a favourite haunt for Saxon pirates and Norman invaders until given to the abbey of Redonin 1006.
Just a tad to the north of Carnac is the town of Auray - you may remember passing it on the day you arrived - and again, this town has a little train which you can jump on and off at will while you explore the local history. The old part of the town is wonderfully intact and the old harbour has been lovingly preserved.
Another good day out from your camping holiday in Carnac or Carnac Plage would be to make your way west to Lorient where there are shops galore to keep your plastic excercised. It has a lovely Sunday market and there is a very good beach at L'amour Plage.
Boat trips to Ile de Groix and Belle Ile are a popular excursion, and the harbour makes a good picture as there are boats in there which would make a multi millionaire weep! Yes, Lorient hosts several important yacht races each year and the Festival Interceltique takes place the first fortnight of August, so the boats there are owned by the mega rich.
